Description

Calla lily is a perennial plant native to South Africa that reproduces by bird-dispersed seeds and vegetatively by rhizomes. The rhizomes can spread by moving soil or garden cuttings.

In California is has been found growing near human habitation in coastal prairies and wetlands along the coast. See CalWeedMapper for its distribution in California outside of cultivation. It is an aggressive invader in riparian areas and pasturelands in Australia and New Zealand.

Why is this plant not included on the invasive plant list?

Calla lily was considered for addition to the list initially in 2006 and again in 2016. It was not included in the nursery survey because compared to other invasive plants, the impacts are localized to coastal areas and its impact on wildlands is not as high as other species.
